SUPPORT FOR ACTIVITIES

Types of Awards.  The Executive Committee of the School will consider five different types of awards, based on the size of the award and the nature of the activity supported.

 Note:  Retroactive applications will NOT be considered

 

1.      Awards for single speakers

2.      Awards for small colloquia, workshops, round-tables, etc. (5-15 speakers)

3.      Awards for major conferences (more than 15 speakers)

4.      Awards for curricular development:  general education courses

5.      Awards for curricular and other initiatives.

 

 

1. Awards for single speakers - cover sheet  

Deadlines:  Applications will be considered on a continuous basis; applications must be submitted at least one week before event

a) amount: up to $500

b) application materials (please use cover sheet):

i.    paragraph explaining the importance of the event to the School

ii.   one-page vita of the proposed speaker

iii.  letter of support from the applicant’s home department

iv.  list of co-sponsors specifying the amount of support promised

v.   budget (the budget should balance)

c) selection criteria

i.    importance of the activity to the School

ii.   support within and, if applicable, outside the FLB

iii.  reasonableness of the budget

 

 

2. Awards for small colloquia, workshops, round-tables, etc (5-15 speakers) - cover sheet

Deadlines:  September 15; December 1; February 15; April 15

a) amount: up to $2,500

b) application materials (please use cover sheet):

i.    1-2 page description of the event, describing its importance to the School and listing all speakers

ii.   letter of support from the applicant’s home department

iii.  list of co-sponsors specifying the amount of support promised

iv.  budget (the budget should balance)

c) selection criteria

i.    importance of the activity to the School

ii.   support within and, if applicable, outside the FLB

iii.  reasonableness of the budget

 

 

3. Awards for major conferences (more than 15 speakers) - cover sheet

Deadlines:  December 1; February 15; April 15

a) amount: up to $5,000

b) application materials (please use cover sheet):

i.    three-page description of the activity, describing its importance to the School.  This should include the dates of the proposed conference, and a list of invited speakers and an estimate of other speakers

ii.   letter of support from the applicant’s home department

iii.  letters from co-sponsors specifying the amount of support promised.  While preference will be given to collaborative projects within the School, all collaborative applications will be considered

iv.  budget (budget should balance)

c) selection criteria

i.    importance of the activity to the School

ii.   support within and, if applicable, outside the FLB

iii.  reasonableness of the budget (budget should balance)

 

 

4. Awards for curricular development: General Education courses - cover sheet

This program encourages the development of General Education courses with high enrollment potential.  High enrollment is considered at least 50 for courses with Advanced Composition credit, and 100 for other General Education categories. 

Deadlines:  February 15; April 15

a) amount: up to $15,000

b) application materials (please use cover sheet):

i.    3-5 page description of the course to be developed, describing its importance to the School and explaining the intellectual and pedagogical benefits of a cross-unit offering. An explanation of the function of each participant in the proposal, and an endorsement from the executive officer of the unit(s) concerned;

ii.   letters of support from relevant units (one of them must be from the applicant’s home department).  Additional letters from units outside the FLB, where appropriate, are encouraged;

iii.  budget: School funds can be used only for faculty, students and units within the School.  Legitimate expenses can be:

a. summer salary or research funds for each participating faculty member (up to $2000 each)

b. support for a graduate assistant (up to $4000)

c. one-time support to departments for team-taught courses (up to $4000).

c) selection criteria

i.    importance of the activity to the School; preference is given to new courses that involve several faculty members within the School.  Proposals linking a unit (or units) in the School with one or more units outside the school will also be considered.

ii.   support within and, if applicable, outside the School

iii.  justification of the budget

 

 

5. Awards for curricular and other initiatives - cover sheet. 

This might include course development of non-General Education courses (e.g., a team-taught course or a course offered for several units by rotating instructors) or program development (e.g. development of graduate certificate programs). 

Deadlines:  December 1; February 15; April 15

a) amount: up to $10,000

b) application materials (please use cover sheet):

i.    3-5 page description of the activity, describing its importance to the School. An explanation of the function of each participant in the proposal, and an endorsement from the executive officer of each unit concerned

ii.   letters of support from at least two units of the School (one of them must be from the applicant’s home department).  Additional letters from units outside the FLB, where appropriate, are encouraged

iii.  budget (budget should balance)

c) selection criteria

i.    importance of the activity to the School

ii.   support within and, if applicable, outside the FLB

iii.  reasonableness of the budget
