Portuguese film depicts real-life political kidnapping

An Oscar-nominated Portuguese film about the kidnapping of an American ambassador will be shown Tuesday, April 26 at 5:30 p.m., in Room G-48 of the UI Foreign Languages Building, 707 S. Mathews Ave., U.

The movie is free and open to the public.

The film is based on a true story. Fernando, a journalist, and his friend Cesar join the terrorist group MR8 in order to fight the Brazilian dictatorial regime during the late 1960s. Cesar, however, is wounded and captured during a bank hold-up. Fernando has the idea...and the MR8, then, decides to kidnap the American ambassador in Brazil. In exchange for his life, they ask for the release of fifteen political prisoners.

Titled “O Que E Isso Companheiro” (“4 Days in September”), the movie is in Portuguese, with English subtitles. Released in 1997, it was nominated for Best Foreign Film in the Oscars competition of 1998.
