Film and discussion at UI Feb. 27
to address feminist history in Japan
URBANA—Film presentations and a panel discussion will address the topic “Viewing Feminist History in Japan” on Monday, Feb. 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Asian-American Studies Program Conference Room, 1208 W. Nevada, Urbana.
The program is free and open to the public.
The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the screening of "Ripples of Change" (directed by Nanako Kurihara, 1993). The 57-minute documentary views the Japanese women’s liberation movement in the 1970s and its influence on contemporary Japanese society.
A second film addressing the women’s liberation movement in Japan during the 1970s follows at 10:30 a.m. with the screening of “30 Years of Sisterhood" (2004).
A panel discussion will follow the films from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The panel will be chaired by Karen Kelsky (head of the U. of I. department of East Asian languages and cultures (EALC) and associate professor of EALC and anthropology.
The event is co-sponsored by EALC, the Asian Educational Media Service, the U. of I. gender and women's studies programs, the Institute of Communications Research, and the U. of I. Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies.
