Free Japanese film series at U. of I. through February

The Unit for Cinema Studies at the University of Illinois is sponsoring a free series of famous Japanese films during the month of February.

The Japan Foundation Midwest Film Festival will be held on Thursdays, Feb. 9, 16 and 23 in Room 101 of the Armory building, 505 E. Armory, Champaign, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The schedule is as follows:

• Feb. 9: “Nobody Knows” (2004) directed by Hirokazu Kore'eda
• Feb. 16: “Go” (2001) directed by Isao Yukisada
• Feb. 23: “Face” (2000) directed by Junji Sakamoto

All the movies are subtitled in English and shown in 35mm format.
This is a traveling festival from the Japan Foundation which is touring five universities and colleges in the Midwest. The UIUC Unit for Cinema Studies is the local sponsor of the event.

The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 as a special legal entity to undertake international cultural exchange. It became an independent administrative institution in October of 2003. In its mission the foundation strives to:

• Promote cultural and arts exchange
• Promote overseas Japanese-language education and intellectual exchange
• Promote overseas Japanese studies and intellectual exchange
• Support collection and provision of international exchange information and international cultural exchange standard bearers
