UIUC French Department announces awards

The UIUC Department of French will hold its annual awards ceremony on Friday, April 15 from 4:30-6 p.m., Lucy Ellis Lounge, 1080 Foreign Languages Building, 707 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana.

The department gives three types of awards. These include a Junior Undergraduate Excellence Award in French and a Senior Undergraduate Excellence Award in French. The awards for juniors and seniors carry with them $50 and $100, respectively, which can be used by the students and which are credited to their accounts at UIUC. The department also awards three Charlotte Kambarian McMillan Scholarships. Each McMillan Scholarship is worth $1000 for each student of superior achievement.

The McMillan Scholarships are named for Charlotte Kambarian McMillan (1925-1995) and were established in 1997 by her husband, Fred (1926-2002) and her son, Dr. John McMillan, a UIUC alumnus who resides in Prairie Village, Kan. Charlotte attended UIUC in 1948 and retired as a high school French teacher at Springfield High School in Springfield, Ill. Fred McMillan (1926-2002) retired from Central Illinois Public Service Company as land and right-of-way supervisor. Their son received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UIUC in 1974 and 1976. He currently works as a diagnostic radiologist in Prairie Village, Kan.
