Buddhist monk from Taiwan to speak at UIUC October 24-25
One of the most renowned figures in contemporary Chinese Buddhism will make two public presentations at the U. of I. on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 24 and 25.
Both lectures are free and open to the public.
Haiyun Jimeng, president and head-monk of the Huayan Temple in Taipei, Taiwan, will give a lecture entitled, “Introduction to Huayan Buddhism” on Monday from 3-4 p.m. in Room 314 of Illini Union, 1014 W. Green, Urbana. Jimeng will conduct a seminar entitled “Huayan Chan” on Tuesday from 1-5 p.m. in Room 405 of the Illini Union.
The speaker belongs to the Huayan tradition, noted for its concerns for meditation practice. “He unites in his person both the most advanced Chinese formulations of Buddhist thought together with the Chinese emphasis on practical training,” comments Alexander Meyer, Associate Professor in the Program for the Study of Religion and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the U. of I.
In his lectures Jimeng will introduce the core teachings of Huayan and Chan Buddhism.
The author of more than 40 books, Jimeng directs the largest Huayan temple in Taiwan.
His visit is co-sponsored by the Program for the Study of Religion, the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies and the Prairie Zen Center.
