Speaker at U. of I. Nov. 14 to discuss Finnish-English bilingual study
Dr. Helena Halmari, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas, will give a lecture entitled, "Codeswitching as a rhetorical weapon," on Monday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m., in Lucy Ellis Lounge, 1080 Foreign Languages Building, 707 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana, on the U. of I. campus.
The talk, sponsored by the U. of I. Department of Linguistics, is free and open to the public.
Halmari will discuss the recent findings in her paper, part of a longitudinal study on the language use of two Finnish-English bilingual speakers during their 15 years in the United States. Drawing mainly from an analysis of a lengthy Finnish-English bilingual conversation between family members, this presentation investigates language choice as a rhetorical ploy. |
